URGENT: Protecting Our Mission Amidst Unjust Funding Freeze

Dear Friends and Partners,

We are facing an urgent and deeply concerning crisis that threatens the core of The Campaign Against Hunger’s (TCAH) mission.

DHS/FEMA awarded TCAH over $1.3 million in funding through the Shelter and Services Program (SSP) through September 2026 to support our critical work feeding thousands of vulnerable families and newly arrived migrants. Now, in an alarming and unjustified move, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and FEMA are withholding some of these vital funds, citing broad concerns over funding being allocated to entities allegedly engaging in illegal activities— concerns that do not apply to us but have nonetheless ensnared our organization in a political and bureaucratic standoff.

As the only New York City nonprofit selected for this particular funding, we are now caught in a policy-driven crisis that threatens the essential food assistance we provide to thousands of vulnerable individuals. Without immediate intervention, this funding freeze will severely impact our ability to serve those who rely on us.

The Facts:

  • Baseless Allegations: DHS/FEMA claims concerns over funding being allocated to entities engaging in illegal activities, including inducing aliens to enter the US, yet no allegations or evidence of wrongdoing exist against TCAH. In fact, DHS/FEMA selected The Campaign Against Hunger for funding precisely because of our trusted work feeding vulnerable families.
  • Funds Already Invested: We have already spent hundreds of thousands of dollars fulfilling the grant’s very purpose—feeding hungry families in crisis.
  • Immediate Human Impact: This funding was designated to feed families fleeing unimaginable hardship. Without an immediate resolution, thousands will face hunger, instability, and deepened vulnerability. This abrupt and unjustified funding freeze places our mission in jeopardy, affecting thousands of lives who depend on us for daily nourishment. We cannot allow bureaucracy and misinformation to hinder our fight against hunger.

Our Response:

  • We are seeking legal counsel to challenge this funding freeze and defend our organization’s integrity.
  • We are mobilizing key stakeholders to demand the immediate release of our contracted funds.
  • We are calling upon our trusted partners—including you—to help bridge this funding gap and ensure uninterrupted service.

Friends, this is not just about funding—it is about justice, dignity, and survival for those most in need. We cannot allow bureaucracy and misinformation to put lives at risk.
